It starts today TRANSMISSION – Polkadot Mixtape Club, a new column featuring a classical interview together with a mixtape to listen (and download) selected by the guest who will answer to our curiosity. Let’s start with Sandra Dieckmann,, she lives in London and is talented illustrator, her subjects are often animals, represented in a romantic and surrealistic way; she picked some tracks for Polkadot, another way to know her more…

1.Where does your passion for animals come from?
I don’t know if it comes from anywhere. It’s just there. It’s always been there. It feels like the truth. I love their eyes, the way the move and I’m fascinated by the fact that evolution has set us humans apparently so profoundly apart from all other creatures that roam this planet. We carry a self , an ego that is misinterpreted by many humans as a superior quality. For me it only means responsibility. Everything is related and interlinked and I think we should pay more attention not only to our own race .

Per me significa solo responsabilità.

2.What is your technique, do you have some favourite tool?
I mainly use pencil (graphite) and pen. Sometimes I worked with inks and most of the time my work is carried into digital means. I don’t want to get stuck though. I’m very much interested in screen printing and collage and hope to experiment while I creatively grow.

Qual è la tua tecnica, hai qualche strumento preferito?
Principalmente uso matita (grafite) e penna.

3.Tell us more about Tukota, the book project you are currently working on ?
Tukota, the white bison is a work of love. My mother who passed away was absolutely in infatuated with bison and I’m doing this book for her as well as myself. It’s in memory of a beautiful strong woman and a playful retelling of the legend of the white bison who spoke to the native American Indians. The narrative is not planned in any way and I’m taking my time with this project. I work on ideas whenever I get the time and while I’m working on commissions enjoy going back to learn more about the legend.

4.What is your relationship with music, does it help you to draw?
I always have audio in the background when I work. In form of music or movies. It really depends on how I feel. Illustrating means many many hours spend in solitude and it carries me along. When I like something I really love it and play it over and over again until I can’t listen any more. Sometimes when a piece is self initiated and it is connected to certain emotions lyrics and music really come into it. I want to stay in that mood and place for a prolonged time and that’s when it is really important.

Illustrare significa trascorrere in solitudine molte e molte ore e mi trascina. Quel momento diventa davvero importante.

5. How did moving from Germany to London influence your artistic approach?
I miss the never-ending green countryside and the farms and the quite life often. Had I stayed in Germany I would have probably studied veterinary medicine. Coming to London only really kick-started my realisation that my way of communication was visual. Maybe the longing to be elsewhere but simultaneously having the knowledge that the city was the place for me to be at the moment was the catalyst for really putting the pen to paper.

6. Who do you think is the typical “audience” of your works ?
Anybody. I think children enjoy my work as much as older people and us in-betweeners.
