Transmission: Olimpia Zagnoli

Olimpia Zagnoli, classe 84. Talento giovane eppure i suoi lavori sono già apparsi sul Washington Post, il New York Times, il New Yorker, Rolling Stone e il Corriere della Sera. Abbiamo provato a scoprire qualcosa in più della mano (e della mente) dietro l’illustrazione che trovate sulla cover del Polkadot Mag appena uscito.

The talented Olimpia Zagnoli is only 27 years old, but her works have already stood out on the Washington Post, the New York Times, the New Yorker, the Rolling Stone, and the Corriere della Sera newspapers. We tried to find out more about the hand (and the mind) behind the Polkadot Mag cover illustration.

1. Disegni da sempre. Quando hai capito che il tuo hobby poteva diventare anche un lavoro?
Più che averlo capito, mi sono data da fare per farlo accadere. È stato un percorso lungo e complesso a tratti, ma adesso sono felice di esserci riuscita.

You’ve drawn since you were born. When did you realize your hobby could also become your job?
Rather than realizing it, I did my best to make it happen. It has been a long and sometimes complicated path, but now I’m happy I have fulfilled this.

2. Come ha condizionato il tuo percorso artistico l’esperienza professionale (e di vita) a New York, a livello di sensibilità e suggestioni?
New York mi ha motivata, mi ha insegnato a credere nel mio lavoro e mi ha molto ispirata.

As far as senses and suggestions are concerned, how did the New York work (and living) experience affect your artistic path?
New York motivated me and taught me to believe in my job. She gave me inspiration.

3. Dopo questa e altre esperienze lavorative internazionali, come giudichi il panorama dell’illustrazione in Italia?
È un panorama interessante, ricco di grandi illustratori storici e di giovani in movimento.

After this one and other international working experiences, what do you think about the Italian illustration scene?
It is an interesting scene indeed. It is rich in great historical illustrators and also young ones on the move.

4. Con “Timbuktu” le tue illustrazioni hanno raggiunto attraverso l’ipad i più piccoli. Come cambia il tuo approccio al disegno con target diversi?
Cerco di non cambiare eccessivamente il mio linguaggio, penso che sia un atto di sincerità e correttezza nei confronti dei bambini.

With “Timbuktu” your illustrations have reached the youngest through the iPad. How does your approach to drawing change with different targets?
I try not to change my language too much – I see this as an act of sincerity and fairness towards children.

5. Quali illustratori “contemporanei” segui  e a quali ti ispiri o ti sei ispirata nella definizione del tuo stile di illustrazione?
Mi piacciono molto i lavori di Andre da Loba, Antonio Ladrillo, Ping Zhu, Lotta Nieminen, Nishant Choksi e tanti tanti altri. Il mondo dell’illustrazione è vario e molto interessante. Per quanto riguarda l’ispirazione però, provo a cercarla al di fuori della cerchia degli illustratori. Credo che ogni tanto sia sano prendere distacco dalla categoria, fare un giro, vedere nuove cose, collezionare appunti e poi tradurli sul proprio foglio.

Which “contemporary” illustrators do you follow? Which ones do you draw or have you drawn your inspiration from while defining your own illustrating style?
I really like the works of Andre da Loba, Antonio Ladrillo, Ping Zhu, Lotta Nieminen, Nishant Choksi and many more. The world of illustration is varied and very interesting. As to inspiration though, I try to find it outside the circle of illustrators. I believe that sometimes you’ve got to keep a healthy distance from the category – get around to seeing new things, collect your notes and then transpose them into drawings.

6. Quali sono invece i progetti editoriali che ti piacciono e dove l’illustrazione gioca un ruolo importante?
In Italia mi sembrano interessanti “IL – Intelligence in lifestyle”, “Inventario” e “Studio”. Non sempre ricorrono all’illustrazione, ma sono esempi di magazine con ottimi contenuti e un’estetica estremamente gradevole e curata.

What editorial projects do you like and in which ones do you find important illustration for you?
In Italy, some interesting ones are “IL – Intelligence in lifestyle”, “Inventario” and “Studio”. Although they not always feature illustration, they are examples of magazines with very good content and an extremely nice and refined aesthetic.

7. Hai già lavorato per moda, musica, stores, applicazioni iphone e ipad… Cosa non riusciresti mai a disegnare e cosa invece non vedi l’ora… ?
Disegnare animali è piuttosto complicato per me. Mi capita di farlo, ma solitamente ci metto sempre molto più tempo. Non vedo l’ora di imparare a disegnare tessuti per farci dei cuscini per il divano.

You’ve already worked for fashion, music, stores, iPhone and iPad apps… What could you never draw? And what can’t you wait to be drawing?
I find drawing animals quite hard. I happen to draw them, but it usually takes me more and more time. I can’t wait to learn how to design fabrics to make sofa cushions.
