Our pieces are simple, distinct, plain and charming. That is how we would describe ourselves as well. Nice people, interested in design, who rejoice in great materials and shapes.
They also ran a super nice competition on their website asking the readers to create and build a ready-made-light that works with a bulb and was under 40 euro.
Sorapot
Sorapot is an another piece of design from an idea by Joey Roth, who Polkadot already featured with his Ceramic speakers. Sorapot is a simple, modern teapot. Its architectural shape and simple functionality bring tea’s quiet beauty into sharp focus. Made from 304 stainless steel, borosilicate glass (Pyrex), and food-grade silicone, it articulates the ritual of tea making in a thoroughly modern way.
Sorapot’s vaulting arch and curved geometry belie its industrial toughness. Made from investment-cast stainless steel, borosilicate glass (Pyrex), and food-grade silicone, your Sorapot will only look better as you use it. My dream is to find a well-loved, well-used Sorapot in an antique shop fifty years from now, and I designed with this image constantly on my mind.
Politica & design?
Solitamente su Polkadot non affrontiamo mai argomenti di natura politica, anche se gli accadimenti degli ultimi mesi nel nostro paese e l’annullamento quasi totale di una sana informazione ci amareggiano molto. Non vogliamo nascondere le nostre idee politiche ma neanche metterle al centro delle nostre scelte di contenuti, salvo eccezioni interessanti. E la campagna elettorale di Nichi Vendola è di fatto una novità, al di là del contenuto ideologico, in termini di grafica & design e di comunicazione politica più in generale. Da sempre abituati al vecchio e retorico manifesto elettorale, quello con il busto del candidato sulla destra e il solito messaggio di speranza a sinistra (con relativi simboli di partito inseriti in cornice), il movimento di Nichi Vendola abbandona coraggiosamente questo format per adottare un modello unico in Italia, con codici completamente diversi da quelli della propaganda in termini di visual e di messaggio. Colori pastello e riferimenti iconici semplici e diretti per enfatizzare di volta in volta un concetto in modo chiaro e divertente (dove divertente sta per volutamente ironico al fine di evidenziare una problematica). Payoff finale “La poesia è nei fatti“. Una visione nuova all’interno di un sistema di comunicazione obsoleto e stanco che noi ci sentiamo di sostenere e apprezzare. Il progetto è a cura dello studio pugliese di design della comunicazione FF3300.
Vanmoof n°5
We already wrote about Vanmoof, the Dutch bike with its unique design. Now they are out with a new model which responds to a special need: in the city a strong chain lock is a must. But chaining it up is time consuming and storing it during the ride is even a bigger hassle. VANMOOF N°5 is the answer. The high quality chain lock is integrated in the frame. You simply pull it out, wrap it around a pole and turn the key in your frame. Your bike is stored safe and sound. When you are ready to ride again you simply place it back in your frame. Easy, safe and city-proof!
VANMOOF N°5 has a striking aluminum rust-free frame with a highly advanced solar powered LED light system built inside its tubes. The lights have two settings: steady mode and flashing mode. The indestructible bulbs are also used for airport landing strips, they are strong. No more loose hanging cables! No more rusty dynamo’s dangling in your spokes! No more lights stolen off your bike! The secret is in what´s NOT there.
Magis Voido
Il nome di Ron Arad è sinonimo di costante sperimentazione con i materiali e radicale rielaborazione concettuale di forme e strutture per arredamento che lo hanno reso protagonista del design contemporaneo. Oltre all’attività di studio, concentrata essenzialmente su pezzi in edizione limitata, Ron Arad firma il design per molte società di livello internazionale. La collaborazione per Magis ha dato vita nel 2006 a Voido, una poltrona a dondolo in polietilene in rotational moulding, anche verniciato. Adatta per esterni (nella versione non verniciata), ma perfetta anche per gli ambienti interni più moderni. Disponibile da SoloAlto

Gessato
When Cristina Lanza, a cosmetics executive, and Davide Carbone, a graphics designer, met in their native Italy, their mutual love for their country’s style and culture as well as for their soon-to-be-adopted city of New York led to a collaboration of mind, spirit and talent that is now known as Gessato. Gessato’s men’s skin care products are manufactured and marketed in the United States with an Italian sensibility for time-hewn craftsmanship, quality and attention to detail.
Gessato was created to find solutions to the skin treatment needs and problems that concern all men and it takes this responsibility seriously. It is totally committed to producing the most effective and luxurious skin care treatments prepared with a combination of scientific knowledge and the utmost care for its customers. But Gessato is not only skin care products. We have had a talk with Davide, to discover the ideas and project behind the name. Cubelight
“Making the switch from the energywasting lightbulb to new energysaving lightsources has been a tough journey. As designers many of us has started drawing lamps hiding the the new lightsources that in generel are seen as ugly compared to the old lightbulb. In the Cubelight we wanted to do the opposite, show the lightsource, embrace it and give it a positive context. The solid wood reflector gives it that surrounding. The warm tone of the reflected light from the wood gives one of the missing pieces of the puzzle when using low-energy lightsources”.
Materials: Powder coated metal legs and solid ash wood. A project by Fagerström & Abrahamsson.
ACNE furniture
The Swedish creative agency Acne, which is mostly known for its fashion brand, presented its first furniture collection during the Paris fashion week. They started off from a Swedish design classic by Carl Malmsten: the Nya Berlin (New Berlin) Sofa. Malmsten designed it for the Swedish consulate in Berlin and it hasn’t been in production since 1949.
Retail Facility
Retail Facility makes available the designs of Industrial Facility, some for the first time, and many of which were previously only sold in certain countries. Industrial Facility has become well known for its design of relevant and progressive projects. Its founders, Kim Colin and Sam Hecht are dedicated to the principal that things we use on a daily basis should last a lot longer than a day. The care and attention to detail in each product confirms that design is much more than image. It is about making things simpler and more enjoyable to use so we’re happy for them to stick around.
THIS Los Angeles
THIS is a new up-and-coming Los Angeles art gallery run by a group of photographers and designers. Their first opening was last Friday, February 12th. Check out their event promo video.
THIS is a group of 5 artists pooling their resources under one roof to provide an outlet for themselves and other creative people. The intention of THIS is to provide a gallery space which brings friends and family together in the Highland Park neighborhood of Los Angeles not just for traditional gallery shows, but a venue for artists to speak about their work, to interact with their audience and facilitate a creative atmosphere in the community.
