Vinci i Blonde Redhead con Polkadot
A 3 anni dall’uscita del loro successo “23“, ritornano i noiser Blond Redhead. La band newyorkese di adozione, ma dal sangue italo giapponese, sta ultimando le registrazioni del nuovo disco “Penny Sparkle” in uscita ufficiale il prossimo 13 Settembre. La cantante Kazu Makino ha dichiarato che si tratta di un lavoro completamente diverso dagli altri dove ha prevalso l’uso dei sintetizzatori sulle distorsioni noise. Il disco è stato mixato dal celebre Alan Moulder, famoso per aver collaborato con grandi artisti come Depeche Mode, My Bloody Valentine e Yeah Yeah Yeahs. E’ possibile ascoltare in anteprima il primo singolo “Here Sometimes” sul sito della band http://www.blonde-redhead.com/, e secondo noi promette decisamente bene! Per promuovere il nuovo disco i Blonde Redhead saranno in tour da questo mese, con una data a Milano il prossimo 11 Settembre. Polkadot mette in palio un biglietto per il concerto che si terrà ai Magazzini Generali. Chatting with Giobia @ Mi Ami festival in Milan
Every year, every June, since 2006, there’s a really good festival in Italy, in Milan, all dedicated to Italian independent music. It’s called “Mi Ami” and the promise is ” the festival of good music and kisses”. We chose some great artists from the line up and we are proud to introduce their music with a short interview and a track available on streaming, Underground they chose! Have a good listen!

Polkadotter: They define your music as garage rock, psychedelia, 60s,… but now we want a definition of Giobia by Giobia.
Stefano/Giobia: We’re a group of people who simply love to play and create music evolving continuously by mixing different genres and incorporating many influences. Our latest album Hard Stories has a garage-rock sound, but in the past we’ve explored other sounds, though always devout to psychedelia.
Chatting with Annie Hall @ Mi Ami Festival 2010
Usually we talk about new bands from England, Usa, Australia, Norway, and the rest of the world, and sometimes we forget there’s an Italian movement at all. It’s not easy for a band in our country to grow up in the music system, the mainstream and pop music have a lot of influence on the radio, music tv (Mtv and others) and newspapers. Mi Ami Festival 2010 took place two weeks ago, a lot of people came to Circolo Magnolia club for three days of music with an excellent line up. We chose some great artists from the line up and we are proud to introduce their music with a short interview and a track available on streaming. ANNIE HALL (Brescia /Milan)
After the gig we met Fabio Dondelli, the singer and songwriter of the band.
Polkadotter: It’s the second time for Annie Hall at Mi Ami Festival, the first one was in 2008, what has changed since the last time? in terms of feelings on stage, emotions, fears, fans!
Fabio / Annie Hall: The first time at Mi Ami festival we were more scared but at the same time we came from a lot of gigs to promote our first album (Cloud Choocko Land) and we were hot on the stage. The second album “Carousel“, is available now but we’ve been playing a bit less. It has been a good gig tonight, on an intimate stage, perfect for our sound, that usually is considered acoustic and sweet, but the Annie Hall band has got a double face also with a more rock attitude when we can play the electric set, just has you’ve seen earlier.
Polkadotter: What about the evolution from your first album to your second one, if it did occurr?
Fabio / Annie Hall: Carousel is a completely home-made album and it is exactly what we wanted to realize, it is an important step of the band but we are currently working on a new project, whose aim is to improve the notoriety of the band. It will be something new, thanks to a high quality production and we would finalize it as soon as possible and we hope to catch a lot of new fans also!
Chiacchierando con gli Ex-Otago
Durante l’ultima edizione Mi Ami Festival 2010, Polkadot ha raccolto una serie di interviste ad alcune band partecipanti al fine di promuovere e far scoprire la scena musicale indipendente italiana. Tra queste gli Ex-Otago, band genovese che si appresta a pubblicare il suo ultimo album (anche grazie all’aiuto dei suoi fans), i quali, più scanzonati che mai, si riconfermano (sul palco e nella nostra “chiacchierata”) una delle band nostrane più interessanti del momento. Piccola avvertenza prima della lettura: gli Otaghi sono dei veri e propri istrioni, per cui attenti ai loro scherzi!
Abbiamo appena assistito ad una delle vostre tipiche performance live in cui più che ad un concerto il pubblico sembra essere invitato ad una festa tra amici dove si beve si mangia e si canta! Tutto questo sembra essere uno dei vostri punti di forza. Descriveteci il vostro rapporto con il pubblico o, come lo definite voi, i vostri “amici”.
Ex-Otago: Si esatto! Questo progetto è nato proprio così, dalle nostre radici, partendo dalle persone che ci seguono. La nostra è una propensione al contatto, una sorta di osmosi tra gioia, sudore e tatto. Stasera è mancato a causa delle transenne (e questo vuol dire che stiamo crescendo!). Il progetto vuole essere popolare come il vino e come era un po’ una volta. È l’unica strada per noi!
Alla fine dell’anno scorso, gli Otaghi hanno lanciato un’iniziativa che ha fatto ben parlare: “Anche io produco gli Ex-otago”, una maxi colletta/investimento proposta ai numerosi fan in cui, con una modica cifra, ognuno può diventare producer musicale, per di più aiutando la propria band di riferimento a portare a termine il suo nuovo disco. Come sta andando il progetto? I vostri fan saranno ricchi?
Ex-Otago: Ricchissimi!! Quasi milionari! Abbiamo la possibilità di fare ciò che ci piace chiedendo l’apporto economico dei nostri fan, cioè dei nostri amici che si sono fidati. Attualmente siamo sopra i 500 milioni. Se voi investiste più di me ricavereste più di me! Purtroppo non siamo ancora riusciti a pubblicare il disco ma non manca molto.
Sempre lo scorso anno, una nuova avventura vi ha visti protagonisti. L’incisione del vostro ultimo album in Norvegia, al fianco di Davide Bertolini dei Kings of Convenience. Raccontateci come è andata. Quali influenze ha portato il nord Europa?
Ex-Otago: È stata una esperienza incredibile! Davide Bertolini è una persona fantastica ed un grandissimo musicista italiano trapiantato a Bergen da 10 anni. La città è fantastica, unico neo è la continua pioggia. Siamo stati lì per 2 settimane e ci siamo vissuti a pieno la città.
MI AMI 2010: Il festival della musica bella e dei baci
Arriva Giugno e ritorna il Mi Ami 2010, puntuale, ormai immancabile: 4, 5 e 6 Giugno. Diciamoci la verità, in un inverno milanese che non ci ha esaltato quanto ad offerta musicale, lo stavamo aspettando al varco. Il programma 2010 è il programma di graditissimi ritorni e conferme, e delle nuove promesse, e tutti insieme nella location del Magnolia troveranno la loro naturale espressione. Ottima line up dunque, la riportiamo di seguito. E non solo musica, torna anche il Mi Fai, l’area dedicata ai fumetti. Noi non mancheremo, of course! Diverse le novità di quest’anno: innanzitutto un giorno in più, quello della nostalgia da Mi Ami, detto il Mi Pensi! in poche parole se vi manca già il weekend del festival tornate sul luogo del delitto anche il lunedì, sempre per fare festa naturalmente e per vivere il contest letterario, tema di quest’anno “l’animale che mi porto dentro”. Altra novità, le Jack Mobile che faranno servizio di navetta gratuito tra milano e l’idroscalo!

Paul McCarthy all’isola dei porci
Le grandi sale sotterranee del Palazzo Citterio di Milano (via Brera 14) ospitano, grazie all’attività della Fondazione Trussardi e del suo curator Massimilano Gioni, una retrospettiva su Paul McCarthy, uno dei massimi esponenti dell’arte dei nostri giorni. Iperrealismo, concettualismo e pop culture si fondono per dare vita ad una parata di violenza, morte e irrisione. Dietro quella che potrebbe apparire una denuncia esclamata contro l’inquinamento etico e sociale, la messa in scena della realtà, che solo l’arte può camuffare dietro una menzogna,è posta a servizio dell’artista per esporre se stesso come genio regolatore del caos sovrano. Fulcro della mostra è, infatti, la monumentale installazione “Pig Island”, riproduzione fedele del suo atelier di Los Angeles, trasportato in nave fino a Genova imballato in diversi container. Realtà e finzione (largamente simboleggiate da una imponente bottiglia di ketchup) perdono di senso in un teatro degli orrori popolato da personaggi che in fondo ben conosciamo.

The art director Tommaso Garner and the stylist and art director Giorgio DiSalvo are the first two artists involved into Radio’s project. We don’t want to tell you more now. See you there?

DUM DUM GIRLS
Nella freddissima Milano di maggio arriva una band che giunge dalla bollente e americanissima Los Angeles: Dum Dum Girls. Il progetto, tutto al femminile, nasce nel 2008 capeggiato dalla misteriosa Dee Dee. Tra il garage, ballate e suoni 60’s, la band ha conquistato il pubblico americano ed ora si appresta ad ammaliare quello italiano. “I will Be”, loro ultimo album, è destinato a macchiare le nostre estati di dolci e impetuese emozioni. A Milano, al Rocket, il 25 maggio.
Liars gig @ Magnolia – Milan 12.05
The restless and schizofrenic band from NY is come back in Italy: Liars. A new album “Sisterworld“ has been published in 2010. Everything into Liars world is sick and damned, if they played close to pop or noise or electro there is always a sinister sadness, a beautiful sense of destruction of happyness. During their carreer the band have approached different styles per album, that’s why the band is schizofrenic. But No wave attitude is into the music and into the lyrics ever. Liars play the pain of our generation. What do we expect tonite? a violent storm into heart and brain. Do we need this? Yes we do, absolutely! JONSI…without Sigur Ros
E’ uscito nell’ultimo aprile l’attesissimo album da solista del vocalist della band islandese che, a partire dal 1994, ha iniziato la sua scalata nella storia della musica. Con “GO”, Jón Þor Birgisson apre una nuova strada personale. Messo da parte momentaneamente il progetto Sigur, Jonsi ci regala atmosfere sognanti e crescendi emozionali sulla base di archi, voce in falsetto e pianoforte. Le melodie frizzanti son rese ancora più nordiche grazie alla collaborazione all’album di due artisti d’eccezione: Samuli Kosminen (Múm) alle percussioni e Nico Muhly agli arrangiamenti orchestrali. Tra le tappe del suo tour mondiale, anche Milano (Alcatraz, via Valtellina 25) ospiterà il suo palco animato da una scenografia teatrale che ospiterà animali selvaggi, edifici in fiamme e stormi di uccelli in un percorso digitale dalla giovinezza alla redenzione. Un artista a tutto tondo capace di materializzare la magia.
1 Maggio: Milano è May Day.
Decima edizione del May Day, l’evento internazionale che si svolge in numerose città Europee in occasione della festività del 1 Maggio. Come ogni anno si svolgerà la Street Parade da piazza 24 Maggio fino a Piazza Castello a Milano, ovvero un’enorme sfilata di veri e propri carri allestiti nei modi più fantasiosi e che prongono differenti tipi di musica (dal raggae al rock, all’indie, all’elettronica, alla tecno…), accompagnati dal pubblico che è sempre più numeroso. La scorsa edizione si sono stimate 50.000 persone partecipanti. Il May Day è una grande festa ma soprattutto un’occasione per esprimere le proprie idee , non solamente politiche perchè è un evento volutamente artistico e ideologico. Anche quest’anno uno dei temi principali sarà il precariato.In un momento in cui c’è davvero tantissimo bisogno di farsi sentire, il nostro invito è di uscire di casa e partecipare numerosi ! Report: Crystal Castle, an electric gig
Please have a look at the Crystal Castle gig’s calendar, and if they played in your city, don’t miss it. We were at Magazzini Generali in Milan where they played last night, and it was very interesting. The gig went sold out some days before, the place was completely full. Not computer on the stage, just synth, drums and Alice, the crazy singer of the duo. She has got a really rock’n'roll attitude, at first she came up with a bottle of whiskey and the first part of the gig was hard with a lot acid pieces, electronic and rough. Then a part of the gig was more quiet but never boring. During the live Alice has done stage diving a lot of times, she needed to feel the people, to stay in touch with them. She didn’t care about safety and bodyguards. Thier music is close to dance and clubbing style, but the gig seemed like an hard rock band’s gig in terms of power. Probably the most warm electronic band actually. Crystal Castle is the canadian duo of Alice Glass and Ethan Kath. Their most popular song is Creamwave, from their first selftitled album (2008).
