Chemical Balance

Chemical Balance by Jean Shin, 2005-09
To create this work, thousands of empty prescription pill bottles were collected from nursing homes, pharmacies and individuals’ medicine cabinets. Like stalactites and stalagmites, the constructions hang down from above and grow upwards from the floor below. Chemical Balance speaks to our culture’s over-consumption of prescription drugs and our bodies’ dependency on these medications. The piece acts like a group portrait, mapping our society’s chemical intake. The illuminated structures radiate with an intense orange glow, suggesting that issues of health reach far beyond the physical.

The StandART Channel Curated by Creative Time
Curation of hotel room art is not such a new idea, but The Standard Hotel family extends this concept from the walls to the LCDs that occupy each room. “The Standard Hotels and Creative Time are proud to introduce an in-room video art exhibit featuring the work of 10 renowned international video artists, debuting on March 5th at The Standard, New York. The StandART channel, viewable on in-room televisions at all four Standard hotels in New York, Hollywood, Downtown LA, and Miami, is an extension of both companies’ ongoing commitment to presenting innovative art in the public realm.” Features artists include Marilyn Minter, Mika Rottenberg, Neistat Brothers, Lee Walton, and many others. | Via

(^_^)365(O_O) (Hello 365)

Heads up for all iphone lovers.
The Japan Graphic Designers Association (JAGDA) and Heidelberg Japan K. K. have recently released a 2010 tear-off calendar: “(^_^)365(O_O)” (Hello 365). 365 Designers for 365 Days. Each sheet is designed by one of them so that each day of the year we can enjoy a different graphic. It includes a variety of designs, printing techniques and types of paper. Unfortunately this product is sold out but for our happiness it is possible to buy a digital version of this calendar, making it viewable using different devices such as your laptop or your mobile.
Let’s Barock

Passion, Fear, Flesh, Death. It could be the proper paraphrase for the exhibition Barock – Art Science Faith and Technology in the contemporary age, which is running at Madre Museum in Naples from December 12th to April 5th. This exhibition compares the issues of our times, so similar to those in the Baroque Age: the scientific discoveries and the uncertainties they bring into society, the religious fundamentalism and the clash of cultures, the tragic feeling in the artistic imagination. The most important similitude between these ages lies in the search for the sensational piece of art. The scandal they create in the viewer for violence and sensuality of expression is a new-baroque culture that overwhelms the senses and the establishment. Damien Hirst and his dead animals who will live forever in the formaline, Matthew Barney and his mutations, Orlan and her exposed flesh, living in a continuous morphing thank to her nip/tuck shows, are few examples of this age of anxiety and passion, blood and fear, extreme vitality and closeness to death. Mona Hatoum, Maurizio Cattelan, The Chapman brothers, Anish Kapoor and many others featured in this exhibition explore the passage of our time from new-baroque to post-humanity. | For further information: http://www.museomadre.it/index.cfm
