Transmission: Drag your Heels

Bring your high heels, polka dot skirt, dark black Wayfarer, bright red lipstick and be ready to listen to solo guitars reminding of the bluesy New York atmophere, with a pinch of late seventies punk. Basically, what I like to call, vintage rock band.
Our brand new mixtape comes from a East-London based quartet called Drag your Heels.
Supported by Tim Robinson, Glastonbury Emerging Talent, Polkadot had the chance to talk to Lucy, Tommy and Al from Drag Your Heels to get to know them better and pick their favourites tracks for us.

Munitevi di tacchi alti, gonna a pois, Wayfarer scuri scuri, rossetto rosso e lasciatevi trasportare da schitarrate che richiamano l’atmosfera blues di New York, con un pizzico di punk degli anni Settanta. Praticamente, una vintage rock band.
La nostra nuova selezione musicale, questa volta, arriva da un quartetto della zona est londinese che si chiama Drag Your Heels. Supportati da Tim Robinson e anche dal Glastonbury Emerging Talent, Polkadot ha avuto il piacere di parlare con Lucy, Tommy e Al per conoscerli meglio e selezionare i loro brani preferiti.

Easy question: How did you get together and where does the name Drag Your Heels come from?
Tommy: Me and Lucy started writing songs together in 2007 and we got the name whilst going through a dictionary…
Lucy: Haha it’s a cliché but true! We wrote a little bluesy track called ‘Dirty Move’ which we decided to put online but we still had no name… We were kind of just flicking through a dictionary and stopping at random pages to see if there were any words that jumped out, and I think the phrase ‘dragging your heels’ just stuck out to both of us. For me, I sort of liked that it has a literal meaning but also conjures up kitsch images of high heels, glamour and drag!
Tommy: We carried on writing songs together between other projects, and finally started things up properly when Al and Kevin joined at the beginning of this year.

Domanda facile: come vi siete incontrati e da dove salta fuori il nome Drag your Heels?
Tommy: Io e Lucy abbiamo iniziato a scrivere canzoni nel 2007 e il nome è saltato fuori mentre si scorrevano le pagine del dizionario…
Lucy: aha si è un pò un cliché ma è vero! All’epoca scrivemmo un pezzo un pò blues dal nome “Dirty Move”. Decidemmo di metterlo on line ma senza avere il nome del gruppo… Beh, eravamo lì a sfogliare le pagine del dizionario, fermandoci a caso sulle pagine per cercare qualche parola interessante. Penso che alla fine la frase “Drag your Heels” abbia colpito entrambi. A me è piaciuto il fatto che oltre al significato letterale (Trascina i tuoi tacchi), richiamasse le immagini un pò kitsch dei tacchi alti, il glamour e drag!
Tommy: Poi abbiamo continuato a scrivere canzoni insieme tra gli altri progetti e alla fine le cose si sono sistemate propriamente quando Al e Kevin si sono aggiunti alla band.

Who writes music and lyrics?
Lucy: I write the lyrics and melodies. My method of writing with Tommy is that he’ll be messing around on the guitar and sometimes I’ll hear a riff that I like and a vocal line comes into my head. And then I’m like, ‘hey play that again, I’ve got something for that!’ More recently, we’ve all jammed on material in practice so our new songs are more collaborative. One of my favourites ‘Don’t Make Me Go Back’ started off with Kevin and Al jamming out a bass line and beat in practice, and then we all jumped in and started playing.

Chi scrive i pezzi?
Lucy: Io scrivo i testi e le melodie.Quando io e Tommy scriviamo,il processo segue un pò questa dinamica: lui cazzeggia un pò con la chitarra, ogni tanto sento un riff che mi piace e subito mi viene in mente la voce e gli dico “Hey, suonala ancora, ho qualcosa che fa proprio al caso!”. Negli ultimi tempi, siamo un pò più collaborativi, per esempio una delle nostri pezzi preferiti ‘Don’t Make Me Go Back’ è iniziata con Kevin e Al che improvvisavano basso e chitarra, alla fine ci siamo tutti uniti e abbiamo iniziato a suonare.

What are the influences on your music? Where do you get inspiration from?
Tommy: I’m inspired by older music; my favourite stuff seems to come out of New York and the blues. Johnny Thunders & The Heartbreakers are my favourite band.
Lucy: Me and Tommy started writing together through a mutual love of New York Dolls and The Stooges. I love delving into music history because I think music was so much more exciting and ground-breaking in the sixties and seventies. I got obsessed with late seventies New York punk when I read the New York Rocker (Gary Valentine) and Please Kill Me: The Uncensored Oral History of Punk – I even wrote my dissertation on it! Blondie are probably my favourite all-time band. I pretty much listen to the first album, Plastic Letters and Eat To The Beat on rotation. Forget Heart of Glass; everyone should listen to Detroit 442, Accidents Never Happen and A Shark in Jets Clothing!
Al: John Bonham. Anything to do with Jack White. Hunter S. Thomson. Ian Curtis. Richard Branson.

Quali sono le vostre influenze musicali e da dove fonti di ispirazione?
Tommy: Sono inspirato dalla musica d’altri tempi, quella che viene da New York e dal blues, Johnny Thunders & The Heartbreakers è infatti la mia band preferita.
Lucy: Io e Tommy abbiamo iniziato a scrivere grazie alla reciproca passione per New York Dolls and The Stooges. Adoro immergermi e approfondire la storia della musica. Credo che il periodo più eccitante e al tempo stesso innovativo sia stato quello tra gli anni Sessanta e Settanta. Da quando ho letto il New York Rocker (Gary Valentine) e Please Kill Me: The Uncensored Oral History of Punk (sul quale ci ho scritto pure la mia tesi!) sono diventata ossessionata dal punk newyorkese degli ultimi anni Settanta. Blondie credo che sia la mia band preferita di tutti i tempi, della serie il primo album Plastic Letters and Eat To The Beat, lo ascolto in loop. Dimenticate Heart of Glass e ascoltate invece Detroit 442, Accidents Never Happen e A Shark in Jets Clothing

Talking about your tracks, Creatures is an ideal soundtrack for a low budget horror movie, what would the plot be?
Tommy: A city being overran by creatures of the night, coming to get you.
Al: Tommy turns into a werewolf and starts hunting the rest of the band, eating them one by one.

Parlando un pò dei vostri pezzi, il brano Creatures è la colonna ideale per un film horror a basso costo, quale sarebbe la trama?
Tommy: una città invasa da creature che ti vengono a prendere nella notte
Al: Tommy che si trasforma in un lupo mannaro e inizia a cacciare il resto della band e ci mangia uno per uno.

Crossbone Boy is my fav… Where did the idea of adding sax come from?
Al: I’ve got a mate with a fine pair of lungs and a sax. He came down to a rehearsal. The rest is as they say history…
Lucy: Thank you, it’s definitely a band favourite. We thought we might as well give it a go and see if any of our songs would lend themselves to sax, and the second Dom started playing on Crossbone Boy, it just worked.

Crossbone credo sia il mio pezzo preferito soprattutto per l’idea del sax.. da dove salta fuori?
AL: C’è un nostro amico con un paio di bei polmoni e un sax. E’ venuto un giorno per provare e il resto, come si dice, è storia…
Lucy: Grazie mille, credo sia anche uno dei nostri preferiti. Beh, abbiamo pensato che forse valeva la pena di vedere come il sax andava in uno dei nostri pezzi. Al secondo Dom ha iniziato a suonare su Crossbone Boy e alla fine ha funzionato.
